Surviving Pollen Season: Keeping a Middle Tennessee Home Clean in Spring
Anyone who has lived through a Nashville spring knows the yellow haze. Here is how to keep it out of your home.
A Nashville native's perspective
Growing up in Nashville, you learn that spring arrives with a yellow coat on every car, porch and windowsill. Middle Tennessee regularly ranks among the tougher places in the country for seasonal allergies, and that pollen does not stay outside.
Stop it at the door
Use a good doormat inside and out, and make shoes-off the house rule during peak weeks. Wipe pets' paws when they come in. Keep windows closed on high-pollen days, however nice the weather is.
Clean the places pollen settles
Pollen collects on window sills, blinds, ceiling fans, baseboards and soft furnishings. Dust with a damp microfiber cloth rather than a dry duster, which just moves pollen into the air. Vacuum with a HEPA filter, and wash bedding weekly in hot water.
Change your HVAC filter at the start of spring and again partway through. It is one of the most effective things you can do for indoor air.
Consider a spring deep clean
Once the heaviest pollen has passed, usually by late spring, a deep clean clears out what has built up and gives your home a fresh start for summer. Many of our clients book one every year.
